Plaza America, Reston, VA

This premier site in Reston VA was outside of the control of the incorporation ordinances of Reston.   A mixed-use project with 168,000 sf of prime retail and 1 million sf of Class A office space in four buildings was able to begin construction during the 1990 recession.  Ms. Edwards designed the site and architecture for phasing stages for each building with optimum parking on a tight site. Phase One was the retail center, using half the site, developing the service access for the office buildings and parking to be built as each new phase was added.  Careful attention was paid to the retail level finishes that would be compatible with the higher end finishes of the offices.  With the Metro, the project will remain a landmark for the rail corridor. Landscaping, water features, plazas and other outdoor amenities were included to compliment this urban center which preceded the Reston Town Center by nearly a decade.


Mandarin Oriental, Washington, DC

The first five-star hotel built new in the District, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel is a landmark building at the City’s Southern gateway. The hotel overlooks the Tidal Basin and has views to the Capitol dome, the Washington Monument and Jefferson Memorial.  Ms. Edwards was lead architect for planning the site, designed the base building, the space planning, the exterior site amenities and the garage.  This elegant 400 room property was planned and architecturally designed and detailed by Ms. Edwards, including all interior planning in collaboration with Hirsch-Bedner Interior designers of Atlanta. The Grand Hotel style makes a statement of luxury and tradition worthy of the location. A garden plaza off of the main lobby and overlooks the Potomac and the boat channel, which is currently being designed as part of the new city waterfront.

Red Truck Rural Bakery, Marshall, VA

Red Truck Bakery’s Owner, Brian Noyes, challenged us to create a modern bakery, café and market that honored its two historic buildings on Marshall’s Main Street.   With most the budget dedicated to infrastructure and new equipment, we creativity used durable and cost effective materials to make for a vital retail environment.
